WWI German Village In Virginia
The German Raiders Kronprinz Wilhelm and Prinz Eitel Frederich were interned at the Norfolk Navy Yard 15 April 1915. The sailors passed their time by building a German village, complete with streets, houses, police and fire headquarters, a church, vegetable garden and a weekly newspaper. Many Tidewater residents were visitors there. Proceeds from the .10 cent entry fee were sent to the German Red Cross Fund. After the U.S. entered the war, the ships were seized and converted to troop ships. The internees became prisoners of war and were transferred to Fort McPherson, Georgia.
