Evaluating Information on Web Sites

  • When evaluating information from the web, it is very important to be able to read a URL. While a site location is no guarantee that the information will be correct, information found at a .gov or a .mil or a .edu site is more likely to be accurate than information at a .com or a .net site.

  • Be very careful of information found at a site with a /~ in its directory path. This is usually the address of a personal web page. For example: www.anywhere.com/~smith/index.html is most likely Mr. (or Ms.) Smith's personal page and any information on that page is their own personal opinion.
