Poetry

If literature has a heart, it's poetry. Poetry gives life to words that may be dull or ordinary alone. A poem can see and feel with fresh insight and expression that creates an imaginary world for readers. Poems reach the emotions with images and expressions that are crafted with the same letters and words that the newspaper uses, but the poet uses those letters and words like an artist uses a paintbrush. The many different kinds of poems form a rainbow of reading as colorful and varied as the darkest blue to the brightest orange.

In the Children's areas of the Norfolk Public Library there are books of poetry for the experienced reader and the littlest listener. There are traditional ballads like The Highwayman, or word plays like David McCord's, The Picketey Fence, or the playful picture poem, Poem Written On the Neck of a Running Giraffe, by Shel Silverstein.

Poems help the reader to see, hear, taste, smell, and touch the world created by the poet. Come to a Norfolk Public Library soon and experience a poem!
