Beginning Readers

Beginning readers are books intended for children who are learning to read or starting to read independently on pre-K, first, second, and third grade reading levels. The reading levels are used to identify books on the low, middle, and high range of difficulty for children beginning to read. The standard format for a beginning reader has the following:
  • large clear type
  • simple vocabulary limited to words of few syllables
  • sentences which are short and follow a rhythmical pattern
  • limited amount of print per page
  • at least one illustration on each double page spread
  • subject matter chosen to appeal to children
  • The following bibliographies of Beginning Readers were created by the Youth Services Department at the Norfolk Public Library.

  • Henry and Mudge
  • Sampler of Beginner Readers
