Emily and the Werewolf
by Herbie Brennan.
Macmillan, 1993

This delightful fantasy tale is a short chapter book suitable for readers moving from picture books into longer volumes. Emily sees Farmer Osboro turn into a werewolf on her way to school. When she asks her mother about this peculiar event, her mother tells her werewolves don't exist. Emily then turns to her grandmother for help. Grandmother, who secretly happens to be a "good witch," gives Emily a book called Hypnosis for Beginners. After practicing on her grandmother's cat and some of her friends, Emily hypnotizes Farmer Osboro to stop him from changing into a werewolf ever again. The farmer is so grateful to Emily that he promises to help save her family from financial ruin. The book is good light entertainment and has charming full-color illustrations.
