Although steam shovels are being replaced by modern gas driven machines, Mike Mulligan refuses to junk his beloved steam shovel named Mary Anne. He accepts the challenge to dig the cellar for the new town hall in just one day or go without pay. Mike Mulligan remains faithful to his steam shovel and Mary Anne finishes the job. Mike forgets a very important detail. Innovation and cooperation create a surprising and happy ending to this story.
