Stark black and white wood block prints complement this bleak short story by the Russian literary master about a starving mother wolf who attempts to keep herself alive to suckle her young by stealing a puppy from a farm. She intends to eat the puppy, but is foiled by his playful, trusting behavior. The puppy escapes, and the wolf ends up as hungry as ever. This little slice of life on a farm in Russia is beautifully portrayed in elegant language.
