Julie and the Wolves
by Jean Craighead-George.
Harper & Row, 1974

This classic tale of survival in the Alaskan wilderness is a Newberry award winner. The protagonist of the story is a young Native American girl who makes friends with a wolf pack and learns from them how to stay alive in a place far from human civilization. The reader learns a great deal about the way wolf packs are structured and how wolves behave in the wild.
