A Message from the Director of Libraries: Norman Maas

Norfolk Public Library has served the people of our region for over 100 years. Library staff work hard to assure this library provides services that touch people's lives. The Norfolk Public Library System has 12 locations, 2 outreach vehicles, and 24 hour per day/7 days a week library web service.

Today, modern public library service requires reaching out into the community to understand the changing needs of our residents. Library staff members are in the process of implementing a new strategic plan that will directly address the stated needs of community residents. Library staff are soliciting input from community residents, networking with other organizations and using data from many sources to help plan services that will better meet the reading, informational, and educational needs of this community for the coming decade.

We are working on a plan to assure that this library does the best it can to help children become readers, and that the library truly acts as a community information center for all. Some areas we are already addressing and will continue to strengthen include:

  • Business Information
  • Career and Employment Information
  • Children's Services and Programs to encourage the development of educational and reading skills
  • Community Information and Referral
  • Health Information
  • Information Services, including Telephone Information Service
  • Multicultural Resources and Outreach to Norfolk's various ethnic and racial communities
  • Online and Electronic Information Resources
  • Parent and Family Resource Services
  • Norfolk Local History and Genealogy
  • The next 10 years will also bring exciting changes to library facilities. Some long-term goals set include:
    1. New anchor branches in four quadrants of the city
    2. A new or renovated main library
    3. Upgraded neighborhood branch libraries
    4. Strong Bookmobile service across the city
    5. Expanded efforts for childhood literacy
    6. Expanded computerized information services for all residents
As we work toward improving library services, we welcome your input. If you have comments or concerns regarding how we can better provide library service, please feel free to contact me at Norfolk Public Library.
