The purpose of the Friends of the Norfolk Public Library is to organize, encourage and strengthen public support for the Norfolk Public Library and to enrich the total resources and facilities of the Library.

The Friends of the Library was founded in 1956. Since then, members have engaged in a variety of activities from raising money to fostering a love for reading and learning. Those efforts include:

  • Raising money for the new book fund by organizing used book sales
  • Lobbying for increased state and local funding and improvement of exisiting facilities
  • Funding special needs of the library such as teh Summer Reading Program, the Library newsletter, and the annual Book Review Contest
  • The library provides expert assistance and free access to an incredible range of materials. From the classics to business journals, beloved children's books to Internet access, biographies to video blockbusters, the latest fiction to current events, you'll find it at the library. As a Friend of the Norfolk Public Library, you will ensure that the library remains a vital and progressive force in the life of our community.

here is not such a cradle of democracy upon the earth as the Free Public Library, this republic of letters, where neither rank, office, nor wealth receives the slightest consideration.
