Norfolk Public Library Collections Adult Collection Consists of a wide variety of circulating and non-circulating materials, targeted towards adults and high school students. The purpose of the collection is to meet the general information, reference, instructional, and recreational needs of adults for life-long learning and cultural enrichment and to support the information and homework needs of high school students.
Family Resource Center Consists of circulating books, audiocassettes, videos and a variety of brochures and pamphlets, targeted towards parents and childcare providers. The collection emphasizes information on parenting and family subjects. Centers have comfortable child-oriented furniture, educational toys and stuffed animals to entertain children while adults locate materials of interest.
Local History and Genealogy (Sargeant Memorial Room) Consists of a variety of non-circulating published and primary source materials, targeted towards individuals conducting local history or genealogical research relating to Norfolk and the Hampton Roads area. The collection also includes selective material on the Commonwealth of Virginia and histories and census information for states contiguous to Virginia.
Teen Collection Contains a variety of circulating resources, targeted specifically towards preteens and teens. The majority of the collection consists of fiction written for teens and nonfiction titles that relate to teen issues and personal development during adolescent years. Teens are encouraged to utilize other nonfiction collections to meet their homework and reference needs.
Youth Collection Contains a wide variety of circulating and non-circulating materials, targeted towards babies, preschoolers, elementary students, middle school students, parents and teachers. The purpose of the collection is to encourage and stimulate reading at very early ages and to support the general information, homework, reference and recreational needs for youth of all ages.
Library and Information Science Collection The Library purchases books, audiovisual materials, periodicals and software to support programming needs, projects, planning, management and to encourage staff development. Due to the specialized nature of these materials, this collection is shelved separately and made available to the Norfolk Public Library staff and the public.
