Norfolk Public Library Celebrates American Indian Heritage Month
November 2010
Norfolk, VA (October 29, 2010) This November, Norfolk Public Library pays homage to the American Indians; the original inhabitants, explorers and setters of the United States, in recognition of National American Indian Heritage Month.
The observation began in 1986 with a week-long celebration. In 1990, President George W. Bush issued a proclamation extending the celebration and designating the month of November as National American Indian Heritage Month. November was chosen because it typically marked the end of the traditional harvest season and was a time of thanksgiving and celebration for the American Indians.
The Library commemorates the occasion with displays, information and a series of special events. The Red Crooked Sky Dance Troupe, a collaborative mix of American Indians, will host programs to educate and promote positive cultural awareness through traditional and contemporary dance.
Bring the entire family to the Arrows in the Wind Program. Chief Bright Sun, Swamp Rat, and Sparrow Hawk will captivate the audience with artifacts, legends and stories.
The Virginia Aquarium will present their hands-on Chesapeake Indians Program, which examines how Virginia’s Chesapeake Indians used the wealth of resources found in the local rivers, the Bay, and the Atlantic Ocean.
Against the odds, America's first peoples have endured and remained a vital cultural, political, social, and moral presence, influencing every area of endeavor in American Life. Many of the foods we eat and the medicines we use were introduced by Indians. More than one highway follows an Indian trail.
Help us recognize the ancestry, contributions and time-honored traditions of American Indians by attending a special program. Visit your NPL location or go online to www.npl.lib.va.us for program updates.
