Norfolk Public Library Offers Special Programs to Commemorate Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month, May 2011

Norfolk, VA (April 29, 2011) – May is Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month - a time to pay tribute to the contributions that people of Asian and Pacific descent have made to American history, society and culture.

Like most commemorative months, Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month originated in a Congressional bill. In 1992, the official designation of May as Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month was signed into law, calling on the people of America to observe the month-long celebration with “appropriate ceremonies, programs and activities.”

The month of May was chosen to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese to America on May 7, 1843, and to recognize the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. The majority of the workers who laid the tracks were Chinese immigrants.

NPL has hundreds of books and resources about the people, history, and cultures of Asia and the Pacific Islands. For more information, stop by your NPL location and ask a librarian.

Join the Library in celebrating Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month. Norfolk Public Library will mark the occasion with the special events below. For a complete list of events, go to www.npl.lib.va.us.
