NORFOLK PUBLIC LIBRARY ANNOUNCES BOARD OF TRUSTEES ELECTION RESULTS

Norfolk, VA (April 29, 2005) - Norfolk Public Library is pleased to announce its 2005 Board of Trustee officers and new Foundation appointee.

Roslyn Brown, a consultant and retiree, is the new Chairwoman of the Norfolk Public Library Board of Trustees and Hannah Brewer, the new Vice Chairwoman. Tom Jones, the President of Dominion Capital Management, Inc., joins the Norfolk Public Library Foundation as a new member.

Brown assumes the Chairwoman position from Ann Sullivan, an attorney with Crenshaw, Ware & Martin. Sullivan led the Board for over 6 years and has been a member of the Board for twelve years. Under Sullivan’s leadership, the Board worked successfully with city officials to plan for the development and construction of several new Anchor Branches. The first Anchor Branch goes to bid this summer and construction should be complete by February 2007. Sullivan will remain on the Board as a member and takes on the new role as liaison between the Library’s Board of Trustees and the Norfolk Public Library Foundation. Other returning members include George Cook, Marion Edmonds, Harry Gustin, Jerry Kantor, and Angelia Williams. In addition to Tom Jones, the Norfolk Public Library Foundation members include Steve Story, Fred Martin, and Harry Gustin.

The new Chairwoman, Roslyn Brown, holds a BA, MA, JD, and has completed all work for a Doctorate in Education except the dissertation. She has served on the boards of the Beth Sholom Home, The Dwelling Place, the National Women’s Political Causes, and the Virginia Stage Company. In addition, she was named a YMCA Woman of the Year and was a founder and president of the Tidewater Performing Arts Society.

Hannah Brewer is a graduate of Wellesley College and studied law at Oxford University. She was the Economics Editor for Harcourt Brace Publishing Company. In addition, Brewer was a former Chair of the Red Cross of Southeastern Virginia, and former Chair of the Red Cross State Service Council of Virginia and the District of Columbia. She was instrumental in the founding of the Red Cross Dental Clinic in Park Place and the Junior League of Norfolk-Virginia

Beach’s Career Clothes Closet. Currently, Hannah Brewer sits on the board of the Red Cross of Southeastern Virginia, the Park Place Dental Clinic, and is the Vice-Chair of the Red Cross Mid-Atlantic Region Community Needs Committee. She has also been elected Vice-President of the Friends of the Norfolk Public Library.

Tom Jones is a graduate of the University of Richmond. He also serves on the boards of the Lynnhaven House, the Cosmopolitan Club of Norfolk Foundation, and the Tidewater Council of Boy Scouts. Currently, he is the President of the International Association of Financial Planners.

On her application to join the Board, Brown said, “I believe I can make a meaningful contribution.” Brown joined the Board in November 2004. Hannah Brewer joined the Board in May 2003. Brewer has worked with the Friends of the Norfolk Public Library for over 10 years.

All members of the Library Board of Trustees are appointed by City Council. The Board meets the third Tuesday of each month. For more information, call the Library at 664-7328.
