Norfolk Public Library Celebrates Library Card Sign-Up Month!

Norfolk, VA (September, 2008) - September is Library Card Sign-up Month and Norfolk Public Library wants to make sure that you are carrying the smartest card of all in your wallets and backpacks this fall-a library card.

There are many reasons to sign up for a NPL card. Why buy when you can borrow? A NPL card provides access to a variety of resources and programs, the Internet, magazines, DVD's/CD's, and thousands of best selling books and audio books. It allows you to experience living history, journey to distant places, and more. The best part is that it is FREE!

A library card is the most important school supply of all. Children who are read to in the home and utilize the library perform better in school and are more likely to continue to use the library as a source of life-long learning. A recent study by the American Library Association also showed that families use libraries to spend time together. Forty-four percent of survey respondents report taking their children to the library for this reason (www.ala.org, 2008).

There is a lot happening at Norfolk Public Library during the month of September:

People who sign up for a library card will receive a free gift; an illuminating NPL keychain (while supplies last). Beginning September 15, the first 50 people who sign up for a library card at any NPL location will receive a buy-one-get-one FREE ticket voucher for a Norfolk Admirals hockey game. The National Maritime Center Nauticus joins NPL in celebrating National Library Card Sign-up Month. Present your NPL library card at Nauticus from September 8 - 19th for buy-one-get-one-free admission.
