  • AlphaDictionary.com.
    Alpha. adj. "Being the most highly ranked or dominant" is a well chosen word for this dictionary. You can search nearly a thousand online English dictionaries at once or get translations in 24 languages from Albanian to Yiddish without leaving the first page. There are also links to dozens of dictionaries in over 300 languages, over 125 links to specialty dictionaries such as rhyming dictionaries, genealogy, law, sports, history, and travel dictionaries, "various 'nym" dictionaries such as acronyms, phrase dictionaries, reverse dictionaries, quotations and thesauri, and, if that's not enough, there's grammar helpers, word games, a blog, a spelling center, and more.

  • American Sign Language Browser.
    From Michigan State University, this site uses QuickTime clips to demonstrate the signs for various words. Each sign is also accompanied by a brief verbal comment.

  • Blissymbolic Dictionary.
    An ideographic writing system consisting of several hundred basic symbols. Blissymbols differ from all the world's major writing systems in that the characters do not directly correspond to the sounds of any spoken language. Since the 1960s, Blissymbols have become popular as a method of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) for non-speaking people with cerebral palsy or other disorders, for whom it can be impossible to otherwise communicate with spoken language.

  • Free Online Dictionary of Computing (FOLDOC).
    A keyword-searchable dictionary of acronyms, jargon, programming languages, tools, architecture, operating systems, networking, theory, conventions, standards, mathematics, telecoms, electronics, institutions, companies, projects, products, history, and/or anything to do with computing.

  • Medical Dictionary.
    Written by physicians for the general public. Some entries are longer than regular dictionary entries and are "miniature medical essays." Entries include not only the usual standard medical terms but also pertinent scientific items, abbreviations, acronyms, jargon, institutions, projects, symptoms, syndromes, eponyms, and medical history.

  • OneLook Dictionaries.
    Search over 250 dictionaries at once, including medical, slang, science, religious, business, Internet, pronunciations, sports, acronym, and general dictionaries.

  • OneLook Reverse Dictionary.
    Find a word by typing in its definition or brief description.

  • Online Etymology Dictionary.
    This site does not give definitions of words. It explains where the words came from, how they were formed, when they originated and how they have been used over the years.

  • Textile Dictionary.

  • Urban Dictionary.
    A slang dictionary with definitions contributed by its users.

  • WWWebster.
    Type the word you want defined and press return. Words in the resulting definition are hypertext linked back into the dictionary, allowing you to use the dictionary as a thesaurus.

  • AltaVista Translation Assistant.
    A free software service that translates English to Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, or Italian and back again. Users may also translate entire web pages however, at present it is more effective to cut and paste text than to enter an URL -- which can become very slow.

    Created by Robert Beard at Bucknell University, this site has links to dictionaries in over 160 foreign languages including Gaelic, Arabic, Mayan, Vulcan and Klingon!
