Congratulations to the Norfolk Public Library
Volunteer of the Month
September 2010

Janean Owens

Janean Owens is a senior at Maury High School. She is originally from New York, but moved from Pennsylvania to Norfolk in August of 2009 following the death of her father. The support of her aunts and other family members here in Virginia have made coping with the loss of her father and adjusting to the new environment easier.

Janean says that, “Volunteering at the Park Place Branch Library has been a rewarding experience.” Her days consist of shelving book’s and DVD’s, putting away the DVD’S, cleaning up the kidzone, wiping all the toys down, checking DVD’S and books in and out, and assisting staff members of the Park Place Branch Library. She has had the opportunity to learn a great deal about library duties, including performing tasks on the library computer, by observing the staff members and taking mental notes.

She chose to volunteer at the Park Place Branch Library because it is close to her new home and it is a perfect opportunity to gain experience working with different people. “I love being a volunteer at Park Place Library. The staff and patrons are wonderful,” says Janean.

When she’s not volunteering, Janean spends her time reading, texting, and shopping. She plans to attend Tidewater Community College and major in nursing after graduating from high school.

Thank YOU Janean for all you do for NPL!

The staff of Park Place Branch Library appreciates Janean’s dedication to the library volunteer program.

She will also be featured in the NPL Newsletter.

“Volunteer of the Month” receives a $10.00 gift card to Barnes and Noble and well as Certificate of Appreciation.
