Volunteer Positions and Descriptions
Thank you for your interest in volunteering for the Norfolk Public Library (NPL). We appreciate your willingness to volunteer your services to assist the library, its patrons and the community. Listed below are just a few of the many volunteer opportunities available at NPL. If you would like to volunteer in a group, or would like to discuss other volunteer opportunities, please contact Amanda R. Please note that all positions are not available at every branch
- Library Aide/Shelver - Assist staff with keeping shelves up-to-date and organized. Organizing books on shelves, making sure they are in order. May include book mending and packing boxes of discarded materials. More information.
- Data Entry/Clerical- Update databases and library files; filing; photocopying.
- Homework Tutors- Assist students after school with homework. More information.
- KidZone volunteer- Clean toys, straighten up area, prepare craft materials for children, monitor behavior (mediate noise control, disruptive behavior, etc.) within KidZone. More information.
- Library Special Events- Assist with activities for youth and adults during appreciation month programs, children’s programs, and other special events held in the libraries.
- Children Programs- Assist with facilitating and/or setting up for children programs such as Babygarten, 1..2..3 Grow Parent Child workshops, and storytelling (training may be required for certain programs). More information.
- Community Special Events- Assist NPL staff at community festivals, fairs and events. Examples of events include being balloon handlers for a parade, and passing out library information at a community fair.
- Handouts/Bulletin Board Helper-Keep bulletin boards and informational displays updated and organized. May include creating thematic displays for promoting upcoming library programs.
- Groundskeeping/Housekeeping- Sweep front area of buildings, clean DVDs and CDs, clean shelves and windows, water plants and other miscellaneous tasks. Can also assist with planting and trimming bushes and plants.
- Special Projects- Other projects include: book sale volunteers, bulk mailings, bilingual programs, and serving as book club leaders.
- Costume Characters-Dress in a provided story time character costume and make an appearance in front of children.
- Special Performers-If you have a special talent, come share it with NPL! For example clowns, specialized storyteller, musicians, dancers, etc. Please call the Volunteer Coordinator to inquire about volunteering for special performances.
- Bilingual Storyteller-Are you bilingual? Come read books in another language to our library patrons! More information.
- Computer Aide-Provides direction in the usage of computer hardware and software to patrons. More information.
